Fabrication of Colloidal Crystal Gel Film Using Poly(<i>N</i>-vinylcaprolactam)

In this report, we successfully fabricated the colloidal crystal (CC) gel films of silica microparticles combined with a temperature-responsive biocompatible hydrogel poly(N-vinylcaprolactam) (VCL). When CC VCL film was prepared by filling precursor into void space between particles film, followed thermal polymerization, Bragg reflection peak red-shifted from 475 nm to 535 due change refractive index contrast. Subsequently, immersion an excess water led formation wherein matrix swelled in form state. As elevating temperature 25 °C, showed color changes red green, arising decrease lattice constant induced shrinkage hydrogel. Moreover, were found be fully reversible. way, believe that such can potentially applied novel sensors biocompatibility.
